(Our recent comparison study (that we will now affectionately call ‘The Comparison Study’) that entailed our scouring the internet for the statistical facts of several webcomics established for 12 months or more, revealed the following data. Please note that this information is by no means definitive, but does represent trends that best answer some of the Webcomic Industry’s fundamental questions)
Importance of Writing Skills:
• Strong writing skills in all genres is paramount to webcomic readers.
Strong Writing Skills among popular webcomics is observed to be witty, sarcastic, humour, and frequently referencing pop-culture and sexuality.
Relevance of Artistic Style / Level of Drawing Skills:
• As with traditional printed cartoons and animation, internet viewers do give strong support to well draw webcomics or badly drawn ones. It is also noted that since many of popular webcomica do not display especially strong drawing skills (Stick figures, clip art, photographs, basic shapes), webcomic readers are rewarding their creators with support if they also demonstrate a high level of writing ability. If your webcomic is Manga, Anime or Marvel/DC comic styled, viewers tend to gravitate toward comics that display strong drawing skills as these sequential art genres are older and have been more established by professional artisits.
Tomorrow we will answer the question, Which is more popular, Running Story Lines or Gag-A-Day Cartoons?
